Kids

Books for children who are serious about buildings. Or children who are not yet serious about buildings but whose parents have decided this will change. We do not judge. Harold has been here before.

A Note from Harold

When people ask if we have a children's section, I say yes. When they ask where it is, I say it is near the back, past Structural Failures and before the periodicals. When they look concerned, I tell them the books are appropriate for ages four and up. This is true of most of them. The one about load-bearing walls is recommended for ages seven and up, or precocious fours.

I did not originally plan to carry children's books. A child came in looking for something to read while her father spent two hours with the Japanese housing monographs. She read everything we had. She was nine. She left with a book about bridges and did not say goodbye, which I respected.

We have carried the section ever since.
